Relax, for Better Hair Days

You wonder what’s going on with your hair. It wasn’t so long ago that it had an incredible shine, was soft to the touch and gave you no trouble when it came to styling. Now, you’re lucky if you don’t have to wear a hat to disguise another bad hair day. What happened?

If you’ve been stressed out lately and just not had time to pamper yourself, let alone your hair, it’s no surprise your tresses are trying to give you a wake-up call! Your hair isn’t simply a lifeless part of you; just like your skin, it’s greatly affected by the way you treat it. Neglect it, and it’ll show.

Don’t let stress and lack of time wreak your hair.

Proper Conditioning

For many women, when time is short, extra pampering falls by the wayside. Even if you use a regular conditioner after your shampoo, you may feel too rushed for deep conditioning. The more your tresses are prone to dryness, the more disastrous a lack of deep treatments will be. Eventually, your hair continues to dry out until you notice it’s a thirsty mess. To combat this, put yourself on a schedule. You may need weekly deep conditioning treatments, and it’s imperative that you stick to them.

Choose a time when you have no obligations. Turn off the phone and lock the bathroom door, especially if you expect interruptions from a partner or those with little feet. Run a bath and enjoy your deep treatment at the same time. While you relax, your hair receives the nourishment it needs.

A long bath is also a great way to unwind from any stress. Too much anxiety will eventually show up in the form of hair loss if you don’t get a handle on it.

More Sleep

Stress often causes you to lose sleep, which in turn makes you even more stressed since you spend the following day tired and irritable. Don’t let stressful days turn into a vicious cycle. At the same time, don’t let one glass of wine at the end of the day–you know, the one to help you unwind–turn into two glasses, then an entire bottle. Drinking too much won’t help your stress levels.

To get a good night’s sleep, turn your bedroom into a private oasis. Leave the laptop and television out. Instead, fluff up your pillows (better yet, put on some fresh pillowcases and just-washed sheets) and curl up with a good read. Trashy novels filled with steamy escapades and/or hilarious heroines are great. Don’t worry about being judged; only you know you read this stuff.

Once you’re relaxed and sleepy, turn off the lights and get some shut-eye. If your mind is still buzzing about your day, spend time listing all of the good things that happened that day. If it seems the bad outweighed the good, then list other good times in your life. Pay attention to occasions that made you smile and laugh, even if it was back in junior high when your science lab partner set your chair on fire.

Going to sleep with a smile on your face is much better for promoting a restful night than fretting about all those minor irritations. It may take practice to make this a habit, but do it religiously, and you’ll eventually find it easier to relax at the end of the day. In turn, with regular conditioning, your hair will gradually return to its lustrous state.

Until you’ve suffered a tragic hair setback from stress-filled days, you might not realize the toll all the anxiety takes on you. Even if it seems you don’t have a spare moment in your crazy days, it’s important that you make time to pamper yourself. You always manage to fit in things that count, right? A gorgeous head of hair should be one of those things.
