How To Survive The Re-Growing Period

Men love to say how they’ll never understand women. But any woman whose ever had the urge to cut off her long locks and then cried, stressed, and agonized through the entire re-growing process can’t say that she truly understands women, either.

As women, we like to keep people guessing. It’s why we like to try out new trends before they go viral, eat at restaurants that haven’t received the rave reviews yet, and most of all, it’s why we sometimes get the sudden urge to go for a super short cut with no hesitation – until it’s time to grow it all back out.

Surviving the re-growing period after a dramatic cut can be pretty excruciating. If you opted for an Emma Watson-esque pixie cut, you’ll find a few awkward phases as your hair descends back to shoulder length. Some layers grow faster than others, you can’t pull your hair back into a ponytail when you’re working out, and most hair styling tools just aren’t compatible until your hair has a little more length to it.

But fret not! We’re giving you some easy to follow tips that will help keep your sanity in check while assisting your hair in stronger, faster growth periods.

Eat Healthy, Be Healthy

The nutrients we put into our bodies can be directly correlated with the ways our bodies function. So if you’re slurping down sugary drinks and snacking on junk food, you can expect your body to function…well, less than perfect. However, a balanced diet with regular exercise can not only help you look and feel your best, but it can give your hair follicles an extra boost!

Look for foods with essential fatty acids. Iron, Omega-3, Vitamin A, and so on, are all fine examples of hair-nourishing nutrients. You can find them in your salads, in fish, and in healthy snacks like almonds and walnuts. Yes, you can still snack and be healthy simultaneously.

Cut It Out

If someone told you that one of the best ways to grow your hair out was by cutting it, you’d probably think they were crazy. Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to tell you and we’re not crazy to do so! Trimming your hair has been proven to keep your hair healthy and strong, leading to an easier growth period.

A regular cut doesn’t have to mean more than just an inch or two. Simply go in for a trim every several weeks and get any split ends taken care of. Your hair will retain its thickness and strength all the while you’re growing it out. Also, frequent trims can help you through the awkward phases you’re bound to have. Keep your look fresh and proper, without hiding under a hat!

Accessorize Away

Let’s start by saying that some hair accessories simply won’t work with too short of a cut. Hair bands and scrunchies are usually out of the question, but headbands, barrettes, and bedazzled bobby pins will probably work just fine. You might not be able to get your bangs out of your face and you certainly won’t be sporting a ballerina bun anytime soon, but you’ll at least have a little bling to help you through it.

Look for accessories that are unique and fit your style. For instance, having headbands in a variety of colors and patterns will help you match your outfits and polish off your look. Headscarves, silk flowers, and heart-shaped clips are also great ways to spice up your style.

Product, Please

Short hair doesn’t necessarily mean boring, limp, and flat. In fact, this is the perfect opportunity to start experimenting with styles that most women can’t accomplish. With a little gel, hairspray, pomade, mousse, or your favorite styling product, you can give a little oomph for a big effect.

For instance, Halle Berry’s short and sassy faux hawk is a fierce look that isn’t too edgy for the office and is just right for a night out on the town. You can also try sporting a boyish part and quaff like Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, and Michelle Williams have all donned. Don’t be afraid of going for a man’s style on your pretty face. A little mascara and lipstick will help you keep your femininity strong while being contrasted with an on-trend boyish look.

Don’t let a growth period get you down. Your short hair might’ve been fun for a while, but you don’t have to suffer for the next several months (or years, depending on how dramatic of a cut it was!) while your hair grows back out. Some product, a few accessories, and a healthy routine will have you back at your long locks in no time – or at the very least, enjoy the ride in the meantime.

  1. I can bearly afford a haircut, went to Great Clips and got scalped. How do you gracefully grow-out very short cut?

    1. Trimming is your best friend. Also when heat styling, be sure to use lower setting and use a heat protectant to reduce the chance of getting split ends. Our Diamond Drops Hair Serum is a great way to give your hair the nutrients and moisture it needs to foster healthy growth.
